Happy Birthday to the networking service that connects every 1 in 7 persons of the entire population on the face of the earth every single day. facebook – an American online social media and social networking service is 20 years old today – 04 February.

Owned by a parent company named Meta Platforms situated at Menlo Park near San Francisco USA which also owns other social media services like Whatsapp and Instagram, Facebook is available in 112 languages across the globe with more than 3 Billion monthly active users as of December 2022.

Founded on 04 February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow students - Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes at Harvard College (part of the famous Harvard University at Cambridge – Massachusetts (USA), the concept basically started off as a digital directory of students at Harvard, which was made interactive and accessible in real time online with various features later paving the way to the term Social Media. With an initial membership restricted only to Harvard students, by 2006 – anyone above the age of 13 from any part of the world with an internet connection and email could be a part of this network – that continues of grow every single day.

 

Used by individuals like me to connect with the world, used by organisations, businesses and Governments for branding, sales and marketing and as a platform to voice one’s thought on every imaginable thing in the world including news and views – real and fake, good or bad, genuine and manipulated.
