Reviving the Second Golden Era of Indian Light Music.
When one speaks about the best era of Indian Light Music also called
Sugam Sangeet – mostly Film Music – One immediately comes up with the time span
of around 1950 to 1975. It is always labeled as “The Golden Period.” Not an
iota of doubt there – that was and will always be the best era of creativity, melody
and Indianness in Light Music. But…what immediately follows to that statement,
as the general talk or approach all around is – after “that era” – music was
not fit - even to be listened to or talked and sung about. The sad reality is
that majority of the audience, organisers and
artists have been brainwashed or rather bulldozed into believing this claim.
India has had not one, but a second golden period of melody and
Indianness in its Sugam or Light Music genre. The era of around 12 years started
with a film named Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak released in April 1988 until a film
named Refugee released in June 2000. An era where melody reigned supreme,
creativity was at its peak – not only in Film Music, but also in a vast array
of Non Film Albums related to Ghazals, Bhaktisangeet, Indipop and also
Television Serial Title Songs. This era coincided with the most important
turning point in the history of Free India – setting the road and tune for the
global version of living….changing each and every aspect of India’s culture,
food, lifestyle, communication, language, sociology, ideology, patriotism and
most important – our attitude towards our life. The Second Golden Period of
these 12 years was the last bastion of Indianness.
This is the culture and heritage of the present Generation Y – kids born
between 1970 and 1990 – all running the nation and world of today – they are at
the peak of their lives in their 50s and 40s. This is the heritage that
unfortunately seems to be conveniently forgotten and pushed into denial and
being erased from memory. Look all around, how many concerts does one see
dedicated to the music of the 90s? Be it in any genre of that era. Very rare.
But as a kid of that era – a Singer of Sukoon Bhare Nagme in Hindustani (Hindi + Urdu) and Pianist – Dr. Salil Latay from Pune has taken it as his life’s mission to
preserve, propagate and present this story of Generation Y. He presents a
dedicated concert titled - Sukoon Bhare Nagme – The Melodious 90s, creating and
cherishing a nostalgia for all generations of audience. The Gen X – who were in
their prime during the 1990s, Gen Y – reliving their childhood and youth and
Gen Z – introducing them to the rich heritage of the era of their parents. With
a unique presentation format called Vocal Sonata – Just the Singer and his
Piano on the Synthesizer, Dr. Salil Latay presents – The Real Solo or One
Artist on Stage presentation in all possible venues – right from the Living
Room of ones cozy home to Open to Sky Grounds and every possible venue in
between in size and audience number. The need of the hour is to organize,
listen, enjoy and cherish the music of that era, if not acted upon urgently, could
just fade into oblivion.
